"Sustainable" gets stamped on a lot of things these days. So it's worth asking plainly: what actually makes a piece of jewelry kinder to the earth? For me, the answer is simple, and it's been the heart of my work from the start — I don't take beauty out of the ground. I gather what the ocean has already finished with, and give it a second life.
Gathered, not mined
Most jewelry begins with extraction — metal and stone pulled from the earth through mining that can be hard on land, water, and the people nearby. A beach-combed shell asks none of that. It was made by a living creature, worn smooth by the surf, and left on the sand. I simply find it, clean it, and reveal the beauty already inside. Nothing is dug up, blasted, or stripped away.
A second life for what the tide left behind
There's a quiet kind of sustainability in giving something discarded a new purpose. Many of the shells I work with arrive dull, chipped, or plain — easy to overlook. Hand-polishing turns that overlooked thing into something worth keeping for a lifetime. It's the opposite of disposable.

Slow-made, not mass-produced
Fast jewelry is made by the thousand, shipped across the world, and often worn a few times before it's tossed. Each Holo Holo Bolo is made one at a time, by hand, here on the Big Island. There's no factory, no overproduction, no warehouse of identical pieces. One shell, many hours, a single result — and because it's one of a kind, it's the kind of thing people hold onto and pass down.
Gathered with respect
Low-impact also means gathering the right way. I take only empty shells, never anything living, and I leave protected places and protected species untouched. The shore stays as beautiful as I found it. That respect for the ʻāina — the land and sea that give us so much — matters more to me than any single piece.
